What is HGH?
“Human Growth Hormone” (HGH) is produced by the pituitary gland to regulate the growth of the body. It is used by the body to generate new cells, help the body regenerate and heal, and make the body grow. It helps the body create healthy muscles, bones, and other tissues. It also directly works on fatty tissues so that it is properly metabolized and used for energy. HGH is normally produced by the body in spurts. It is most active at night when we are sleeping. As we age, our bodies produce decreasing amounts of HGH.
What is IGF-I?
“Insulin-like Growth Factor – I” or “somatomedin C” aids in the growth of children and helps in the creation of more complex substances in adults. It is secreted by the liver and other parts of the body in response to human growth hormone. This works hand in hand with growth hormone to help bones grow, to produce protein and other tissues.
What can HGH do for you?
HGH has been proven to help children with growth hormone deficiency, adults who suffer from declining IGF-I levels, and aid adults who would like to increase their muscle mass and reduce their fat. What this basically means is HGH mainly helps with the growth of children, the proper production of muscle, bone, and other tissues your body needs, and also directly helps you burn fat. Other effects of HGH include increased systolic blood pressure and increase in plasma glucose (blood sugar) levels
What are the potential benefits of HGH?
The potential benefits of HGH are many but let us first focus on the actual benefits already given by HGH. It helps in diseases where there is a lack of HGH or IGF-I in children and adults. It also helps your body generate the tissues and components it needs. It also helps your body burn fat so that it is not stored in the body. It has the potential to help your body age slower but that is still yet to be proven by succeeding studies. The physical results can be compared to physical changes that happen to a 10-20 year old person. HGH may be used to help prevent muscle loss as a person grows older. Still, more research is needed to confirm these potential benefits.
What are the risks in taking HGH treatment?
The main issues with HGH treatment are that the long-term side effects have not yet been established. In Rudman’s study 12 healthy subjects were administered HGH for 6 months only. They were tested for physical changes but not for how it affected them overall. It is not even known if their quality of life has been affected in a good way. There is also the possibility that it might worsen other diseases like cancer. One more issue is that it may cause the body to be dependent on HGH injections. Also misuse of HGH treatment may lead to manifestations of hypersomatotropism. (Edema, hypertension, diabetes, or cardiomegaly)
Who were the subjects in Rudman’s study?
Twelve old men were injected with HGH for a period of 6 months. These subjects represented a third of the population in the 61 to 81 age bracket. Seven other men served as the control group where they compared their results. The test has not taken into account how HGH may affect subjects below 60 years of age.
What did Rudman’s study prove?
The lack of HGH is one of the factors that contribute to the loss of muscle mass and the increase of fat mass in the body. By supplementing that lost HGH, lean muscle mass or muscles increases, fat or adipose mass decreases, your lower back gets a little stronger, your systolic blood pressure improves (the blood that goes back to your heart) and that fasting glucose (that means your blood sugar when you haven’t eaten anything) increases. It doesn’t prove the long term effects of using HGH. It only confirms that HGH affects these parts of the body.
What are the implications of Rudman’s study?
Rudman’s study has shown that HGH is a factor that affects the health of men aged 61 and older. The results were very promising. HGH was shown to be able to change physical characteristics of its subjects but benefits to overall quality of life still need to be proved. Does HGH help increase physical strength, and stamina of its subjects? Are their lives improved by actually taking HGH?
How far have studies on HGH gone?
So far there have been other studies on HGH that compares its effects on athletes, women and younger adults. Studies in these areas show that having additional HGH has no effect on the muscle strength or maximal oxygen uptake. It also shows that HGH does not give further benefits during exercise. This means that although HGH has produced a lot of physical changes in the body, the functions related to these changes have not really improved. More tests have to be done to clearly show the complete benefits of HGH treatment.
What is next in the study of HGH and IGF-I?
HGH studies are still in their infant stages. There is yet to be a study of how the long term supplementation of HGH will affect the human body. A very small portion of the population has been tested on how HGH would affect them. It is still not known how increased IGF-I levels will affect people with sicknesses that are somewhat related to how much IGF-I there is in the body. It is also not known if the increase in muscle mass, reduction of fat mass, and all the other effects resulting from the administered HGH have improved the endurance and stamina of the patients.
What else needs to be done regarding studies on HGH?
More research needs to be done on the long term effects of HGH and if it is viable to create a long term HGH treatment for healthy men, and women regardless of their age. Issues addressing resistance and how other diseases may affect the supplementation of HGH should also be looked into. Since the study of Rudman focused on the administering of HGH in only a short period of time, it is not yet known if the benefits shown in this study could be improved on or maintained with continued use of HGH. More studies needs to be done before one should even consider using HGH as a long-term supplement.
