The Fight
Against HGH Releasers
The fight against athlete’s use of substances promoting the
abnormal levels of human growth hormone (HGH) in the body has turned in a new
leaf. Unlike in the early parts of the decade wherein athletes were using HGH
injections, the trend has changed into something more complex. Today, athletes
are no longer using synthetic forms of HGH to augment their performance.
Instead, they are now using HGH releasers that prompt the pituitary glands into
producing too much HGH in the body, which can affects the body’s growth and
metabolism. This HGH releases bring the same physical benefits as what synthetic
HGH can give.
In a story written by AJ Perez for the USA Today in 2008, HGH
releasers were revealed as a more discrete way of boosting physiological
performance specifically boosting muscle growth. What makes HGH releasers better
than the synthetic HGH substances is the fact that the former is difficult to
detect. During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, authorities used blood testing to
detect those who took synthetic HGH substances. However, many experts said that
these tests will not be able to detect those who used HGH releasers.
HGH
Releasers Hard To Detect
While
there have been no athletes found to have used HGH releasers, many sports
officials are worried about HGH releasers because use of this substance is not
covered under government regulations, and that researchers are still finding
ways on how to detect it. According to the USA Today article, HGH releasers may
be taken orally or injected intravenously.
The story
also cited the opinion of HGH expert Peter Sonksen of the St. Thomas’ Hospital
and King’s College in London who said that since HGH releasers do not have
growth hormone in them, it would be impossible to detect them through the
prevailing testing method.
It also noted the opinion of
Gary Wadler of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) who said that athletes are
aware of the fact that there is no reliable testing method to validate the use
of HGH releasers.
Sermorelin The Sole
Pharmaceutical HGH Releaser
The USA Today article also
revealed details on the only pharmaceutical HGH releaser being marketed,
Sermorelin is made mostly in China and is the forged copy of Geref. The said
medication from the firm Serono was approved by the Food and Drug Administration
a decade ago for treatment of children with growth problems. Geref was withdrawn
from the US market by Serono it's manufacturer.
Drug Enforcement
Administration deputy assistant administrator Joseph Rannazzisi said on the same
story that while the agency is familiar with Sermorelin, it cannot act on the
misuse of the said drug because it has no legal authority on it.
What is equally alarming is
that Sermorelin can be had for a fraction of the price of HGH injections, which
costs over $2,000 a month, according to the USA Today article.
Across the USA are various
clinics that offer Sermorelin therapy, although the USA Today article said one
pharmaceutical company, Theratechnologies is doing research on a medication that
can be even more effective than Sermorelin.
