Normally skin does not produce new collagen as we age, but when damage heals (like when you cut yourself) the skin will produce new collagen. Laser resurfacing prompts the body to produce new collagen as it heals the damage, which is why the skin will look more youthful afterwards. Lasers can be used to change the color of scars, freckles, and blemishes in some cases, and a side effect of laser resurfacing can be discoloration, especially if you have a darker skin color to start with.
