There are many viruses that stick around in our systems long after they have stopped causing us trouble, but our body can't quite get rid of them. It turns out that as we age, our immune systems devote more and more resources to fighting these not quite harmful viruses, and they run out of resources to deal with new problems, which results in signs of aging.
If this is true, we might only be a couple of decades away from a real life extension therapy--adding tens of years onto the human lifespan!!
