Detailed Advice for Losing those Love Handles
I was approached by a good friend the other day with an age old dilemma. He asked what the best methods were for losing his love handles. I asked him to give me some time to organize my thoughts because the answer to this is not as easy as one may hope, but deep down, I’m sure he realized that.
1) There are two very important factors in the fast reduction and loss of love handles.
a) Careful attention to nutrition
If you are serious about getting rid of those ugly layers of belly fat, you have to take the crunch. Start by getting rid of processed foods, chiefly carbohydrates.
For example, take a look at your breakfast routine. If you are eating a bowl of cereal each morning, replace it with fruit. You should be getting your carbohydrates from fruits, nuts, and vegetables instead of grains as much as possible. Your meals need to feature vegetables that are high in fiber and a lean protein. Snacks should consist of fruits and nuts. Let’s face it, your love handles are goin nowhere if your daily diet includes a sugar-rich soda, a bowl of white pasta, and a milk shake.
b) Interval Workouts
Studies are showing over and over again that cardio workouts just aren’t as effective for the reduction of belly fat as carefully pinpointed interval training. You will get frustrated quickly if you focus your attention and efforts to your cardio workout. It just won’t do for you what interval training will do. If you do not work on building muscle, dieting and burning fat will not completely eliminate belly fat. A chest or back with some muscle built up will hide some of the belly fat and make it appear that you have no love handles at all. When you only focus on cardio and diet, you will lose weight, but your belly will still be soft and will still display that spare tire you are trying so hard to get rid of. Weight training and interval workouts in addition to your diet and cardio routine will build muscle while diminishing fat and you will be thrilled with the end result.
2) If a guy could only make one change to his program to lose his love handles, it would be removing classic ab exercises like crunches, twists, etc, and replacing them with interval training.
3) If you do only one thing to this end, that one thing should be to use interval training in place of your traditional abdominal exercises, including crunches, sit ups, and twists. Overall, these exercises are wasting your time.
4) Diet is your bigger barrier. There are way too many options for men to cheat; allow yourself a single cheating meal each week to satisfy your cravings.
5) Work on specific muscle areas to minimize the appearance of belly fat: deltoids, pecs, and laterals.
If you are like most men, you don’t have the proper muscle mass needed to work on losing weight. Building these muscles will be very productive for you.
6) So . . . how exactly do you go about losing weight and building muscle at the same time? Here’s what you do:
Focus on your several workouts each week; two or three are ideal that work your entire body.
For each workout, do the following five exercises: one total body abdominal exercise, one each of upper push and upper pulling, one lower body single leg, and one overall lower body.
Complete this circuit, at eight to twelve reps for each exercise, three times for each workout.

Push-ups and planks are much better core exercises than endless sit-ups.
