There are many choices that need to make when it comes to your overall appearance that will help determine how young or old you look. Your makeup, clothing styles and colors, and, of course, your hair all have a determinant effect on your apparent age. Of course, the color of your hair is important. Grey hair is a dead giveaway of age, even if your face, body, and clothes say otherwise. The hair cut and style you choose will also do a lot to make you look young or old.
Surprising Results Of Various Hair Lengths
Experts will tell you that universally, the best length to wear your hair when you wish to look young is between your chin and your shoulders. Some women equate long, super model style hair or short pixie style cuts with youth, but these two styles can work against you. Long hair that does not work with your face shape or that is worn on women who are advanced in years will tend to look unkempt. Very short hair works great on a limited variety of face shapes, and its severity can easily work against you. On the other hand, hair that reaches just above the shoulders, whether straight, wavy, or even curly, frames almost any face beautifully and gives you a well groomed, very “together” look that will make you look young and pretty.
The Magic Of Layers
No matter what length you choose for your hair, you will find that adding layers will give your hair more body and life, thus making you look younger. No matter what the cut, hair tends to lose some of its bounce and luster as we get older. Wearing your hair cut into layers gives your hair that bounce that is probably missing when your hair is cut into one single length. Not only does it give your hair a youthful look, the added bounce will add light to your complexion and make your overall appearance more youthful as well.
Keep The Bangs, But Keep Them Soft
Bangs will always be in style because they soften your look and can cover a wide forehead. However, thick bangs, cut bluntly over the brows are too severe and will make your face look older and your hairstyle dated. Keep your bangs soft; they may be swept to the side, or they may hang over your forehead in an asymmetric cut, perhaps done with a razor instead of scissors. The result is a youthful, soft look that will help you highlight your eyes and give you a less serious appearance.
Thin Out Thick Locks
Thick hair is the envy of all, but when it goes unchecked, it can weigh you down and make you look tired, adding years to your overall appearance. By keeping the length of your thick tresses up over the shoulders and having them cut into layers, you can still reap the benefits of having been blessed with thick, healthy hair, while lightening up your look and brightening your face.
Choose A Style That is Shorter In The Back
One telltale sign of age is the loosening of the jawline. Sadly, it happens to most of us regardless of weight or level of physical fitness. A cut that is shorter in the back than the front will give the illusion of a tighter jaw, thus making you look younger. In fact, this style of cut will give your hair some natural swing, and this movement and body will minimize flaws overall, drawing attention away from complexion issues, crow’s feet, and more. Your overall appearance will be brighter and younger looking.
I was wondering what your thoughts are about shaving the head totally a la Bruce Willis. I am already thinning a little and have some gray hair.
Shaving your head would look nice if your head is well rounded but then again if you are already bald it would probably look nicer shaved anyway.
It’s sad that all people are concerned about as related to aging are the physical aspects. There’s more to looking young. You have to take note of your health state as it starts to decline as you age. More than the wrinkling of your skin, more than the old look of your face, you should check your blood pressure, your blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Certain conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, which usually come with old age are definitely bigger concerns than how to style your hair so you can conceal your age. Even if you look like a twenty-something but you are already nursing diabetes and hypertension, you will still have a decreased quality of life. In fact, you will be in danger of losing it earlier than you should if you continue minding your aesthetics and forgetting about your total wellbeing altogether.
Thank you for this helpful post. It is quite more useful than what my hairstylist usually tells me everytime I ask him to make me a new look for a younger appearance. Unfortunately for me, he always does it wrong. Now, I know what kind of hairstyles will flatter my face. Which kind of hairstyle will actually look good on me. I’m sure I’ll never ever home from the salon disappointed.
