New Year’s Resolution: Hold on to Your Hair!

Hair loss is usually an issue for more mature people, but it can also start for those of much younger years, especially if the tendency runs in the family. Sadly, not all of us are able to make baldness look endearing (a la Albert Finney as Daddy Warbucks in the film adaptation of Annie) or sexy (as did Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor in Smallville, or Persis Khambatta as a Deltan navigator in Star Trek: The Motion Picture).Hair Loss

Certain hairstyles have been devised specifically to disguise the fact that a person is losing his or her hair. Unfortunately, such tricks often look even worse than if the person had simply decided to let the hair loss show. The same can be said for most toupees, even rather expensive ones. Thus, unless you feel comfortable with simply shaving your head (or, in more desperate cases, getting hair implantation surgery), you might wish to pick up some information about how to slow and even reverse hair loss.

Stress can be a decisive factor in triggering rapid hair loss. This writer knows several high-achieving young men whose hair started to noticeably thin in their college years, as they became more stressed by their academics and other demands. It is possible that psychological and emotional stress is contributing to your hair loss. Are there any factors in your life that you might change or improve in order to become a calmer, more balanced person? If so, look into them: your scalp is likely to thank you for it. Scalp or head massages can also be helpful. Not only can they make you feel more relaxed and calm, but they can also improve circulation to your follicles, making for more durable hair strands. Thus, people who often play with their hair or comb it (not too hard, though) might actually be keeping their scalp healthier by stimulating blood flow to it.

Diet is important, as well. Whole grains, fruits, and vegetables can help to keep your strands in place, not to mention improve your general health. Also, look into increasing your zinc intake, as this mineral is important for hair (re)growth. Iron deficiency is also a critical factor which you should examine, especially if you find that you have other symptoms of iron deficiency, such as tingling limbs or dizziness. Drug abuse has also been shown to increase hair loss, so, if you happen to be taking chemicals that you shouldn’t, you have one more good reason to kick the habit.

It is also possible that the way you treat your hair is speeding up your hair loss. Do you use stiff gel or other styling products every day? What about harsh shampoos? Both can help make your scalp more bare. You may want to get a new haircut or hairstyle that doesn’t need as much heavy-duty maintenance. Get milder shampoos, and/or use shampoo in diluted form. Many shampoo brands also offer versions of their product that claim to strengthen hair strands and/or decrease the rate at which your hair falls out. You might want to try one of these products.

Shedding too much hair might also be the result of a fungal infection on the scalp, ringworm being a prime example. Get your scalp examined by a dermatologist to determine if you have such a problem. Getting rid of the infection is likely to cause hair to rapidly grow back.

Finally, it might be best to take hair loss more seriously, as in not treating it only as a matter of keeping up your appearance. Hair loss may actually be a symptom of a far graver problem, such as thyroid disease. Go to your doctor and ask for a check-up. It might be a nerve-wracking experience, but ultimately it is better for you to have yourself checked, rather than waiting too long and possibly finding out that you have an advanced ailment.

  1. holding on to your hair is easier said than done. So far I don’t thing there is a treatment that can fully reverse hair loss because I already tried propecia, rogaine and I am now using a hair loss laser. I still have not given up on the laser yet as you are supposed to use it for few months before you see results. In short there is nothing more that I would love to do than keep my hair.

  2. in so many articles i have read so far, not just from this blog but every where, diet and exercise seem to be the solution to all health problems. if only that is easy to follow through. let’s face it, we are surrounded by a lot of unhealthy foods. we also do not run out of reasons for not working out. that is simply because committing to a healthy dioet and exercise is not as easy as it seems. There are lots of temptations that make us choose the easier route. that is, indulging to a ahppy life with lots of savory and delightful dishes and engaging in activities that will not further stress us out. is there a supplement that could improve one’s determination and motivation to choose the ‘good life’ instead? i’d love to get my hand on it.

  3. Hair is our crowning glory. That’s why we, especially women, go far and wide to achieve a silky and healthy hair. So when it starts to fall, panic sparks. If only there is a truly effective treatment for hair loss that does not come with any side effect and responses immediately. But heck, there is nothing easy in this world. Everything comes with a consequence. Everything needs to be worked on to enjoy favorable results.
