Prevent Stunted Growth through Your Secret Garden!
Housewives are very strict when it comes to what they feed their family,
especially their children. Moms prefer to have a garden where they can pick
fresh, home-grown vegetables that they will serve on the dining table. This way,
they are confident that what they are feeding their children is nutritious and
safe from toxic chemicals. These mothers also favor gardening in order to supply
enough nutrients for their children especially during the time when they are in
the process of growing and developing. There are educated mothers who are aware
that their children may experience impediment in growth when there is not enough
nutrients in their daily intake of food.
Stunted growth is one of the most common problems in children wherein there is a
decrease in the rate of growth and development of the human body. This may be
caused by a hormonal condition known as the human growth hormone deficiency. The
growth hormone is accountable for the development of the bone and muscle
tissues. And, inadequate secretion of this pituitary hormone will lead to
insufficient improvement of the skeletal and muscular functions. This can be
treated with the use of human growth hormone injections like Somatrem
(Protropin) and Somatropin (Humatrope, Saizen and Norditropin). These are given in order to replace the
growth hormone that is not secreted satisfactorily by the anterior lobe of the
pituitary gland. This will produce positive results as evidenced by improvement
in both the height and the child’s motor operation.
However, hormonal deficiency is just one of the few causes of stunted growth in
children. The arrest in the child’s physical is most commonly caused by the
inadequate supply of the essential nutrients in the diet. This can be avoided by
being able to give the child balanced nutrition during his or her growing years.
For women who enjoy gardening as the source of food for the family’s dishes,
they must be aware of what kind of plants they should have in their backyard in
order to adequately supply the nutritional needs of their growing children.
Mothers can choose from various kinds of plants that they can add in their
backyards.
The following fruits and vegetables are just few of what you can sow in your
very own backyard:
1) Citrus fruits for the C
Children need vitamin C in order to boost their immune system during the growth
years. Vitamin C is an antioxidant and it also helps in the production of
collagen (constituent of ligament, tendons, and bones). It also supports
formation of the different tissues in the body. Aside from vitamin C, this fruit
is also loaded with calcium, potassium, and thiamin. Fruits that are good
sources of vitamin C or ascorbic acid are: orange, lemon, apple, and grape.
2) Pea pod for your protein needs
Pea pod is known to supply large amount of protein in the diet. A serving of pea
pod accounts for 10 percent of the quantity required for protein per day.
Protein is another essential nutrient involved in the growth and development of
children. This is important in the formation and repair of tissues in the body.
Pea pod also contains vitamin K, B6, thiamin, and folic acid.
3) Potatoes, the starchy vegetable
Potato is just one of the many carbohydrate-rich foods, which gives the main
source of energy to the body and the brain. This is a very nutritious food
unless it is cooked with too much fats and oils like in French fries, for
example. Aside from the carbohydrates, this vegetable also contains a
considerable amount nutrients needed for the body’s development like protein,
potassium, vitamin C and B.
4) The calcium-containing green, leafy veggies
Green, leafy vegetables are known to possess great quantity of iron, folic acid,
and calcium. Sufficient amount of nutrients, especially calcium, is necessary
for children who are in the age of continuous growth. Calcium is important in
the formation and strengthening of bones and teeth. This nutrient is also
important in muscle contraction, heart functioning, and the synthesis of
hormones. Examples of vegetables that you can sow in your garden are: broccoli,
lettuce, and spinach.
There are other kinds of vegetables and fruits that can be grown at home and be
sure to choose the best quality for your family!
