Sculptra
Aging is a natural process that occurs in our body. With aging, we encounter
several skin and facial problems. These include facial wrinkles, nasolabial
folds, lines, creases, thinning and sagging of skin, scars, dark circles, and
more. Our skin may also lose its elasticity and firmness. We may even lose
facial fat since we lose collagen as we age. All these will make us look old and
stressed out as if our juice of youth has been sipped out. Today, a new
treatment can help us alleviate these symptoms of aging. It is through the
Sculptra treatment that has been used for over 25 years for aesthetic purposes.
It has been used all throughout Europe since 1999. So, let us know what Sculptra
is and what it can do for us.
What is Sculptra?
Sculptra is an injectable synthetic dermal
filler that is made of Poly L-Lactic Acid. It can help improve facial contour and volume
especially on the cheeks, chin, as well as around the temples by increasing the
thickness of the skin. Dermal fillers are used so that our dermis, one of our
skin’s layers, will go back to its natural, youthful state. It is most often
used to reduce or totally remove unsightly wrinkles, lift scar depressions
usually caused by pimples or acnes, as well as replace fat loss and collagen.
How does Sculptra work?
Sculptra is technically not a dermal filler as it does not work by filling up
the wrinkle itself. It works by stimulating the production of collagen that
fills the folds, skin depressions, and wrinkles. Therefore, the one filling it
up is actually our natural body-produced collagen and not some artificial
product. The product will be injected onto your wrinkled area, scars, or areas
where you have lost facial fat. It is generally used for treating facial
lipoatrophy that causes sunken cheeks, hollow eyes, and indentation. This
treatment is also great for HIV patients who may have lost facial fat or
experience skin wasting during their long treatment process.
Only local anesthesia is required for this procedure and it can be done in
your physician’s clinic or medical spa. Then, you can go home right after and
proceed to your usual routine as if nothing happened. It is also important to
know that not all dermal fillers can be used on all parts of the face. For
example, like Sculptra, it is not ideal to use for the lips unlike other types
of dermal fillers.
How many sessions does it take to see the results with
Sculptra?
Results from this treatment are gradual. Unlike in plastic surgery or botox
where there will be an abrupt change in the facial appearance days or a few
weeks after surgery. With Sculptra, it takes multiple sessions, usually 3 to 4
sessions of 3-4 weeks interval before one can see results. That is why you need
to wait months in order to achieve maximum results. However, since it is
gradual, the benefit is that, it does not become too obvious that you had your
face done. The changes are subtle but the effects are truly outstanding. Your
doctor will determine the number of sessions needed depending on your needs. It
will also be based upon your desired results. If you want only a few changes,
then only a few sessions are necessary. Each procedure may be done within 15-30
minutes only. After using Sculptra, the treated area improves up to as much as
80%. It is usually used by men and women within the age of 35 to 60 years old.
How long will the results last?
In most cases, results last for a period of 2 to 4 years. Sculptra is one of
the most long lasting dermal fillers in the market today. It is second to
Artefill that lasts for more than 5 years and is even considered as semi
permanent. However, the disadvantage of Artefill is that if the results are not
very satisfying for the patient, it will often require surgical removal which is
quite risky. Other dermal fillers such as Juvaderm and Restylane last only for
as long as 6 months to 1 year. Since the effects of Sculptra last longer, you
will also need fewer sessions unlike other dermal fillers. However, Sculptra may
require some touch ups every 6 weeks depending on your case to achieve maximum
results
What are the advantages of Sculptra over plastic surgery and
other dermal fillers?
Aside from having only subtle changes which last longer compared to other
dermal fillers, another great advantage of Sculptra is that you will not need to
undergo surgery. This means it is less painful. It only takes a few minutes each
procedure unlike in plastic surgery where heavy preparations are required. You
may even need to stay in the hospital overnight or more. Sculptra is also
temporary so if you are not happy with the results, your body can break it down
and it will go back to its original state. Sculptra is also not an animal-based
product unlike the dermal filler called Evolence. Animal-based products have a
higher risk for allergies and other adverse reactions.
What are the side effects of using Sculptra?
The risk for side effects and hypersensitivity reactions are very rare
therefore, it is generally safe to use. The most common reactions may include
mild discomfort around the injection site, bruising, redness, swelling,
necrosis, vascular ulceration, hematoma, infection, and reactivation of herpes
infection.
How much does Sculptra treatment cost?
Each session or procedure may require one or more syringes as it may involve
more than one area of the face. Each syringe may cost around $450 to $550. To
achieve maximum results, three or more sessions may be necessary. The cost will
also depend upon your cosmetologist. However, usually the rate becomes higher if
your doctor is more reputable and experienced in the field, thus making you more
assured that he knows what he is doing.
