Anti-Aging Measures and Cancer Survival

Sometimes, the onset of cancer is facilitated by unhealthy habits. Smoking is one very notorious example. However, even very healthy people can suddenly develop cancer—even if they have crafted particular health regimens that supposedly lower the risk of cancer. Remember that no cancer prevention plan is entirely fool-proof, though the good ones are certainly worth following because they can at least significantly reduce the risk of developing cancer. So, let us say that you have been undergoing an anti-aging regimen, but may have developed cancer. Should you hold on to your regimen, or is it necessary to look into changing it, given your new health situation?

Antioxidants are likely to play a significant part in your decision. Antioxidant intake is said to delay physical aging, as well as to prevent cancer. Foods such as blueberries and pomegranates have high antioxidant content. As you might guess, such foods can be a valuable tool in terms of cancer prevention. Furthermore, you may even buy antioxidant-containing creams that might help you stave off skin cancer, particularly if you spend a lot of time out in the sun. However, if you already have tumors and are going for cancer survival, the value of such products changes. This is because experts cannot seem to agree on the effect of antioxidants on cancer patients. While the chemicals prevent cancer, it is possible that, once you get cancer, antioxidants will actually make your tumors grow faster. You might want to lower your antioxidant intake, just to be safe.

What about other aspects of your diet? Well, the interesting news is that an anti-aging diet (heavy in fruits and vegetables, lighter on sugar, meat, and fat) is also likely to help prevent cancer. This diet is likely to continue to be good for you should you happen to develop cancer. However, if your form of cancer affects your digestive tract, or if you have to take extensive chemotherapy, you will probably have to adjust your diet to something your weakened digestion is able to handle.

If you are taking anti-aging supplements, you should probably stick to organic ones, as they are less likely to have carcinogens. Even so, you should probably show your pills to your doctor so that he/she can offer an opinion on them, and make sure that the supplements will not have an adverse reaction with whatever other drugs or treatment you happen to be taking for your cancer. You may be able to get certain supplements without a prescription, but if you are undergoing cancer treatment, do take extra precautions and get a doctor’s advice, so you will not risk inadvertently lessening the efficacy of your treatment.

Still, do keep in mind that cancer prevention is really the best thing you can hope for. Do look into measures that will cut down on your risk of developing it, particularly if our family has a history of cancer. It is quite lucky that many of the prevention measures also have the “bonus” effect of making you look and feel younger, as well.
